Meet Dr. Nimphius

Dr. Brian Nimphius has more than ten years of extensive research and study in the field of wellness science and preventative treatment solutions.

A graduate of Parker College of Chiropractic, Dr. Nimphius is a Certified Wellness Chiropractor, a member of the ICA Council of Wellness and is a Maximized Living Mentor, a national designation that is exclusive only to a select number of doctors.

In 2006 Dr. Nimphius was named the Readers Choice Tarrant County Chiropractor of the year by the Southlake Times.

Dr Nimphius received his B.S. in Exercise Science and a minor in chemistry from Northern Arizona University. While attending Northern Arizona on a track scholarship he was 3 times named to the All-Conference team as a pole-vaulter and decathlete.

Dr. Nimphius and his beautiful wife Tiffany have 3 children. There oldest son Bailey is 6, Trinity is 1yr old and the newest addition Taryn was just born on January 11, 2008.


Protect Your Joints

When is the last time you ate a large portion of animal cartilage? Really? Has it been that long? If you are like most Americans then your diet doesn’t contain the basic building blocks that healthy joints need. To maximize the health of your joints, especially if you have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis or other degenerative joint disorders, you should begin enhancing your diet with supplements that support healthy joints.

Making a well informed decision is essential when purchasing supplements. Your local grocery store may stock supplements but cheaper almost always means lower quality. Here are a few things you should look for when purchasing supplements. Consumers should ensure that their supplements are pharmaceutical grade and include the highest quality ingredients. A good supplement should be free of fillers such as gluten, wheat, or corn products. Supplements should also be hypoallergenic and not include fragrance, coatings, artificial coatings, or preservatives. Asking your heath care professional where to purchase quality supplements may save valuable time and keep you from wasting money on cheap ineffective products.

The well researched and popular joint supports glucosamine and chondroitin should be included in every joint supplement program. Glucosamine provides the basic building blocks of connective tissue (cartilage, ligaments, and tendons). Glucosamine also promotes regeneration of damaged connective tissue and helps slow down joint degeneration. Chondroitin acts as an anti-inflammatory and gives cartilage resistance to outside forces helping cartilage maintain its structural integrity. Vitamin C and MSM are commonly added to premium joint supplements to maximize the effects of glucosamine and chondroitin ensuring maximum potency.

The recommended dosages for most joint support ingredients are:
1500mg for Glucosamine HCL
1200mg for Chondroitin Sulfate
500mg for MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

Hydrolyzed collagen peptides are another valuable supplement that helps maintain healthy joints. Collagen peptides are naturally occurring substances that are found in connective tissue, and when hydrolyzed they are easy to digest and readily absorbed by the body. This supplement helps to stimulate new cartilage growth and maintain the structure of healthy cartilage. Collagen also promotes healthy skin, nails, and hair.

Unlike pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs that may be addictive and cause organ damage from prolonged use, the supplements mentioned above have no side effects. Don’t postpone supplementing your diet. Don’t wait for pain to force you to take action. Take charge of your health! If you have already been diagnosed with osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease it is essential that you begin joint care supplementation to slow the effect of the disease process. Educate yourself and consult your doctor before you buy or begin taking joint supplements.

If you have ever called our office, you have most likely spoken with Courtney and encountered her infectious personality. Courtney is from Carrollton, Texas and graduated from the University of North Texas. She has been keeping CORE running smoothly for 3 years and is the director of operations for all four CORE locations. Courtney loves spending time with her family, especially her 5 nieces and her nephew. She enjoys training for and participating in Adventure Races. When she is not training, she loves dining at The Cheesecake Factory and Wild about Harry’s custard shop.

Niki was born and bred in Dallas and attended The University of Texas at Alington. She graduated both high school and college Magna Cum Lade. Niki is married to Zak and

has 2 cats. They also have a new addition to their family: Sadie, a little chocolate lab. Niki is an avid reader, likes watching King of Queens and Everybody loves Raymond, loves to camp outdoors and “rough it”, and is very involved in ministry at her church, The Village Church.

Tristan is from the Garland/Rowlett area. She is currently attending the University of North Texas, while working full time at the Las Colinas office. She hopes to graduate in the next two years. Tristan has a miniature white German Schnauzer named Bailey (who she says is her little princess!) In the free time that she does have, Tristan loves spending time with her family and friends. She is a big-time family person. She is a huge hockey fan, and of course the Dallas Stars are her favorite team!

Molly is originally from Abilene, Texas. She graduated from Abilene Christian University. Molly recently joined Dr. Bologna at our newest office in Keller. She is married to Peter and has a yellow lab named Charlie. Molly’s hobbies include spending time with friends, SHOPPING, traveling, singing on the side, and her husband. Her husband, Charlie, played collegiate football and they have several friends in the NFL, therefore, she can become the ultimate football fan when she has to!

Patient Spotlight

Greg and Jonica Cason have lived in Coppell for fourteen years. Both graduated from Austin College in Sherman, Texas; although, Greg went on to complete his MBA at SMU while Jonica pursued a job using her French/Business degree.

They have a son, Bryce who is 14 and a daughter, Emory, who is 12. The children attend Faith Christian School in Grapevine, Texas where there is not only a strong emphasis on Christ and academics, but also athletics.

Bryce plays on the Faith Lions JV football and baseball team, and has played Lacrosse for Coppell. Emory plays volleyball as a Faith Lady Lion, basketball, and select soccer for the D’Feeter’s soccer club.

For leisure, the family enjoys taking their two Portuguese Water dogs to the lake, where the family water skis, wake boards and tubes. Everyone likes to snow ski in the spring and snorkel in the summer.

Jonica is a member of the Coppell YMCA, Assistance League of Coppell, and serves as a leader for the Women’s Bible Study at the Farmer’s Branch Church, and on the board of the Parent Teacher Fellowship for Faith Christian School. Greg has worked in real estate for over 20 years and serves as President and owner of the real estate company he started in 2004. His focus is in the multi-family housing market.

Deep Down

Deep down, I believe all people desire to be healthy and happy. We all try and get farther away from pain, and sickness, and get closer to health and vitality. And I also believe that deep down we know what things we must do to achieve this. We all understand the simplicity of health…Eat good food, get sufficient exercise, and think positively. Right? But where most of us fail is that although, generally we know what to do, we fall short of producing the results necessary for a change. Now what I’m hoping to teach you is that many of you could not only lose fat but become healthier all while changing nothing in your diet, just changing the times that you eat those foods. Intrigued? Then read on. Please don’t misconstrue this as me saying it’s okay to eat junk. Bottom line is we all need to eat more fruits and vegetables (apples and salads, not French fries and peach cobbler!).

The timing of when we eat certain foods has a large correlation to how our body burns that food. Upon waking, our body has been in a fasting state for the last 10 hours or so (depending on whether you woke up and had some midnight chocolate cake!). At this point the body has burned off the calories from the previous day’s food and needs some energy to help get you started on your day. Your breakfast needs to be high carbohydrates with low fats. Ideal foods would be fruit. As the day goes on your carbohydrate intake needs to decrease and your protein and fat intake needs to increase. This means that a large pasta dish would be better suited for lunch than for dinner. Your last meal of the day ideally would be vegetables and a lean protein source (chicken, fish, tofu). The reason for this is that your body needs the protein source for repairing during the night. Some kind of a salad with a dressing made from good oils is ideal. Getting a healthy oil is important to health. Not all fat is bad! I know that this may come as a shock to a lot of you but our bodies actually need fat in order to survive. Good fats come from nuts and seeds, as well as in fish, and non grain-fed animals (i.e. a deer in the wild). Supplementation is recommended with either an omega-3 fish oil or flax seed oil which tastes great on salads. This will help your body to be in an anti-inflammatory state and be in less pain. If you eat a large amount of carbohydrates late in the day (pasta or bread for dinner) your body will store it as fat to burn as fuel during a time where large amounts of calories are needed. If we do this day after day, you can see that our fat stores will increase.

Sample Menu: Remember this is just a sample! If there are foods that you despise on this list just substitute for something that you like. For example: Bananas for grapefruit; not chocolate for grapefruit!

In the morning:

· Breakfast: One or two pieces of fruit. Grapefruit, apples, pears, oranges, strawberries are all acceptable.

· 2-3 hours later: Oatmeal with berries in it for flavor. Use blueberries or raspberries (personal opinion). 1 cup of herb tea.

During the midday:

· Lunch: Broccoli, tomato, and spinach omelet (3-4 egg whites with one yolk) with a small sweet potato. Grease the pan with a small amount of olive oil or coconut oil.

· Late afternoon: Small grilled chicken breast and veggies.

During the evening:

· Dinner: Full serving (4-8oz) of wild fish with grilled veggies, avocado, and salad with flax seed oil dressing.

· Late evening: More veggies and fish if still hungry and nuts/seeds mix

I know that for many of you changing everything in your diet will not be possible at first but try and make small changes and then tackle the bigger ones. If you have any questions about this remember to ask the Doctor whom you see. Doctor Schnappauf, Ward, Griffith, Brown, and I would be more than happy to assist you to better health.

In summary, eat more fruits and vegetables and eat them at the right times. But if you feel the need to eat dessert, it is better to eat it after lunch then after dinner. Remember that our bodies are like a race car; they need high quality fuel to run to their full potential. Put garbage in; and you’ll get garbage out! We all know this to be true and take better care of our cars (which we can replace), but how about our bodies? My challenge to you is to try to be healthier for the next 30 days. Make one little change if you can a day and you’ll be amazed to watch your energy and health go up, and your waist size go down.

Meet Dr. Bologna

We are pleased to announce the addition of our newest doctor and team member, Dr. Michael James Bologna.

Dr. Bologna received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology from the University of British Columbia in April of 2003. He completed his Doctorate of Chiropractic at Parker College in August of 2006.

To better help his patients achieve their health and wellness goals, Dr. Bologna completed the International Chiropractor Association’s Wellness certification seminars which focus on nutrition and exercise and is a guest lecturer on wellness and chiropractic.


BACK PAIN….BE GONE!!!

Have you ever had to quit your golf game on the 10th hole? How about having to “stop and rest” while your family is enjoying a vacation? Scenarios such as these are common in people who have mechanical back pain. Statistically, back pain is the most common reason people present to their doctor each year. Thousands of work days are missed each year as people can barely leave their homes due to crippling back pain. What is worse; most of the causes of back pain are easy to identify and are, more importantly, preventable.

A recent study published in the medical journal Spine indicated that patients with mechanical back pain had smaller/weaker back stabilizer musculature than those without back pain. This is very significant as weak core musculature can manifest as many of the conditions that we hear about all the time such as, “arthritis, bulging discs, herniated discs, bone spurs, and degenerative joint disease.” In other words, if the stabilizer musculature is weak, then your back will wear out faster.

If one has back pain, what can one do? First, consult a doctor who is well educated in the examination and diagnosis of all types of back pain, both organic and mechanical. Tiger Woods has a golf coach, so there is no reason not to employ the expertise of a back coach. Once the etiology of your back pain has been determined, a treatment plan should be addressed. When diagnosis of mechanical back pain is made, one must deal with the inflammation first. This can be confronted conservatively with ice and passive therapies or pharmaceutically with a steroidal or non steroidal anti inflammatory. Remember, though, that inflammation is merely a byproduct of tissue damage and treatment should NOT stop here. Next, alignment, in terms of both skeletal and soft tissue inequalities, should be evaluated. If the muscles on one side of your back are tighter than muscles on the other side of your back or if your shoulder or hip heights are uneven, it creates a lopsided posture which gives your whole back a mechanical disadvantage and causes pain, inflammation, and fatigue. In other words, your posture and supporting muscle tone must be balanced so that you weight bear properly.

Third, only after the inflammation has been treated and the alignment restored is one ready to begin rehabilitation. Appropriate strengthening exercises should have a strong emphasis on the core musculature. Concentration on static and dynamic stabilization is necessary. Involvement of a team who is adequately trained in core stabilization protocols is highly recommended as self guided programs often fail and can lead to further injury, causing this whole cycle to repeat.

In closing, one must have a proactive, not reactive, approach to spinal hygiene. Accurate information and a well executed game plan for back injury prevention can assist in allowing one a more productive, pain free, enjoyable existence.

Meet Dr. Brown

Dr. James Brown received his Bachelor of Science degree in May on 2002 from Dallas Christian College. He then received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in December of 2006 from Parker College of Chiropractic.

Dr. Brown is a former United States Marine. His hobbies include travel, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and snowboarding.

Food for Thought: A Carbohydrate Story

At Core Chiropractic we design our treatments to address many of the more common musculoskeletal conditions associated with everyday wear and tear. In, addition we strive to prevent chronic disease processes, optimize your weight, slow premature aging and enhance life. With that in mind, this series of information is dedicated to nutrition and the compelling issue of grains and sugars as it applies to your weight management and controlling mitigating factors of chronic diseases.

If you made no other adjustments to your lifestyle/diet but eliminating or seriously reducing grains and sugars it is likely your health would rapidly improve and within days you would start losing weight. Within weeks you would have a very noticeable improvement in your overall health. Within months, in addition to the dramatic health and weight management, you would also be experiencing a tremendous increase in your energy, mental acuity, and positive focus. Continue with the program beyond that, and you will significantly extend the time you spend enjoying life.

Now, take into consideration that this kind of change, like any other, takes some getting used to, and you will need all the help you can get to master the cravings and stick to it. The facts are that 95% of the grains consumed in the US are processed, which strips them of what limited nutritional value they do have. Those with specific disease processes have additional concerns with grains and sugars as they are directly related to flare-ups of conditions such as Celiac Disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and Diabetes, which affect a greater number of Americans every year.

Avoiding grains and sugars has been popularized by the recent low-carb dieting rage. Although low-carb dieting is effective for weight loss, the low-carb approach misses the fact that you need carbohydrates in your diet, at varying levels depending on your activity level. There are good carbs that should compose most of your carbohydrate intake, and they are found mostly in high fiber vegetables that grow above ground. Your body actually prefers these complex carbs because they slow the release of simple carbohydrates, like glucose, and decrease your insulin levels. Insulin is the fat-building hormone in the body; therefore, increases in insulin cause weight gain. On the other hand, the “troublesome” carbs that you need to reduce or eliminate from your diet are found in grains, sugars and sugary foods, as well as starchy vegetables like potatoes. These carbohydrates will increase your insulin levels and tend to promote weight gain and illness. So, physiologically it is primarily your body’s response to the overindulgence of grain and sugars, not your intake of fat, which makes you gain fat weight.

Consuming sugar also impairs your white blood cell function and thereby decreases your body’s immune system response, making you more vulnerable to disease. To make things more interesting, high insulin levels also lower two very important hormones -glucagon and growth hormone which are responsible for burning fat and sugar and promoting muscle development. In addition, insulin causes the body to feel hungry, usually for SWEETS. Your body has a limited capacity to store carbs, but it can easily convert those excess carbohydrates, via insulin, into body fat; which means the more excess carbs, the more body fat, thereby causing an overwhelming overweight epidemic.

In closing, please appreciate that everything in moderation addresses weight management according to non-specific food items; the fact is that decreasing foods like selected grains and sugars can and will help you loss the weight AND increase your quality of life. These lifestyle changes plus consistent exercise open the gateway to your health and happiness.
