A neurodiagnostic evaluation involves specialized testing which helps differentiate neurological conditions from other conditions with similar symptoms. Data from these tests helps the Core Team determine an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
All tests are performed and interpreted by Dr. Stephen Ward. Dr. Ward has been a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board since 1997 and has been board certified in Neurodiagnostics since 1999.
Testing Procedures Include:
Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV): This test is co-performed with a needle EMG. NCV testing evaluates the speed of an impulse traveling through a nerve. Electrodes are placed on the skin and the nerve is stimulated. The resulting activity produces a wave form that can be interpreted by the doctor to provide information regarding the integrity of the nerve. This test is used to diagnose and localize nerve damage.
Needle electromyography (EMG): This test is co-performed with a NCV. In needle EMG testing, a needle electrode is inserted through the skin into the muscle. The electrical activity detected by the electrode is displayed on the computer screen and heard through the speakers. Further, the patient may be asked to contract the muscle. The wave forms produced provide information about the ability of the muscle to respond when the nerve is stimulated. Needle EMG testing helps to differentiate primary muscle conditions from muscle weakness caused by neurological disorders. Needle EMG is also the only recognized testing procedure for confirming radiculopathy (pain down the arm or leg).
